Should Adoptee's Have Rights?
By: Reverend Greg Streator
It's about 10:30 here on the east coast, and it's a Friday night. I have been thinking allot about adoptee rights as of late, and pondering some serious questions in my mind. Since my friend Marley made me aware of the efforts being made to change the adoption laws in much of our country. I see groups such as Bastard Nation working in each state to change laws, and it becomes a battlefield. Now I will admit, we have had some minor victories in some states and have had the laws changed that now allow adoptee's access to his or her full adoption records. But I live in a state where the law allows some, and censors the rest for no apparent reason. Ohio, in its infinite wisdom saw fit to block and seal adoption records for people who were born between Jan. 1 1964 and September 18, 1996. Now if you were born before 1964, all you have to do is present your ID, and you can see your full adoption record, and after Sept 18, 96 you have to be between the ages of 18 and 21, more censorship. After that you become like me — sealed in darkness for no rhyme or reason. I remember Marley telling me once that these state laws were sometimes put into effect to 'protect the rights of the birth parents'. But what about my rights, after all we are talking about my life here. Last time I checked, I am an adult of the correct age, (plus a few years) who desires without having to present a case before a judge who will simply dismiss me because he or she does not like to open adoption records and feels its 'immoral' or 'against their personal religious views' to do so. I have a real problem with someone telling me what I have the right to access, and what I don't have the right to have access, when it comes to my personal life. I see these laws designed to protect the biological parents, simply censoring the adopted child from ever having any type of a voice, or right to explore his or her family history fully, without the censoring of the government. Now maybe I am not thinking straight here ' but isn't that insanity' After all insanities second definition is 'foolish and wild'. These laws are foolish and wild in the eyes of every sane person who looks at them. H.B 84 is the law that is blocking me, and literally thousands of others like me here in Ohio from seeing what is ours to see. Now I do not expect every adoptee in the State of Ohio to go to his or her county seat and pick up their adoption records, but I would suspect there would be an out-pouring of those who want that information and who will use that information responsibly. BUT oh that's right, we little folk have no voice, our votes don't really matter. Calling our public servants clearly does no good. They are too busy fighting in the congress of what party will control it in the next election, or trying to bring up these insane ideas that will do nothing but bring more and more control to our already monitored and probed lives. After all, they have the big eyes in the skies now that can literally be used to zoom down and read the newspaper you are reading on the back porch while you enjoy your morning coffee. We spend billions daily to continue to fight a war that most Americans do not want our troops to be involved in any more. However W, while loosing his pants in the White House, doesn't seem to even have a clue while he keeps on talking about social security reform, while literally millions of people are jobless in America and in my own state because of his policies.
'America's manufacturing crisis has hit the state of Ohio especially hard. Ohio's economy was rocked by the 2001 recession, and it still is far from making a recovery. Between January 2001 and July 2004, Ohio ranked third (behind California and New York) in the nation in total private sector jobs lost, shedding 246,500 such jobs, a drop of 5.1 percent in this period' (Ohio Job Exports, A Report of the Job Export Database Project, AFL-CIO Industrial Union Council Washington, D.C. September 22, 2004)
(Just thought I would add another nail along the way)
I am not even sure that W, or any of his CBN buddies would even listen to the little voice in America. Somehow the saying 'A government for the people, by the people' just doesn't make much sense to me any more. Especially after I see the politics of something as small as my adoption record, and the dance I have to go through right now to even have a snow balls chance in hell that I might get lucky and get the judge on a good day, and he will honor my request'''..now who's dreaming'
I do believe with all of my heart that those given the chance to have access to his or her adoption records without the censor of the government in any way would use that information responsibility. YES, we might make contact with our birth parents ' and OH, if we do, it does not reflect in any way shape or form that we love our parents and our families we were given any less. It does say that we want to fill in the void that has been present in our lives, and we know that this information, this meeting will fill that void in. Don't we have the right to have the answers to those questions in our lives' Every other person born in America who is not adopted, knows down to the detail about his or her family ' adoptee's in so many cases are left in darkness ' because the law that wants to 'protect the rights of the birth parents'. Vocalized in rare form by the United Nations, 'everyone has the right to know where he or she comes from'. I guess the American Ambassadors were absent the day the UN came to that conclusion. So let me ask you ' if you were in my shoes, wouldn't you be fighting for the same thing' Wouldn't you want to know all about your birth family'
Someone asked me once when I started the search for my biological family, they said 'Don't you love your family any more''' I said, 'No'that's not why I am doing this. I am doing this because I do love the family I was given, and love myself enough to know that I have the right to have those answers. It has nothing to do with a lack of love. It is in my opinion an 'act of love'. This person quickly walked away, and has never spoken to me sense. Apparently she did not agree with my statement. Apparently she believes in censorship. That is truly sad. America, we adoptee's are out there. Soon enough like many other things to come, this world will change. You either change with it, or get out of the way. Sometimes'change is a good thing'especially in those old laws that make no sense to anyone. Here is the bottom line America, until people who believe in censorship, and no equal rights for all people are gone, or have one massive heavenly experience, my records may just stay sealed. Its unlikely that any judge will open my records simply because I want to 'seek answers'. They only do that if you are dieing, and then ' it's still a big maybe. America may wonder why there are loud mouths like me around and groups like Bastard Nation around. Its because of stupid laws written by people who have no clue of the true effects of what that law will do in the end. Pro 29:18 "Where there is no vision, the people perish". We are just here to educate those who have no Vision, on how to get a Vision. Don't take this personal, because at one point, I had no Vision, and someone educated me, and now I am better for having that knowledge. You will be too!
