Grandkids
By: Robin Berliner
Just when you think that life is going to slow down, there are Grandkids. I have heard it said, "Grandkids are your reward for not killing your children". I must agree. While my son is a wretched pool of germs and sweaty sox, my grandson is a sweet breeze from the ocean. And my daughter, God bless her, holds a mirror where all my poor judgments and parental mistakes from her childhood reside, but my granddaughter is Tinkerbell with purple wings floating on a white cloud.
My grandkids are finally getting to be fun. It is with no small emphasis that I admit that I am not great with really little kids. They mess their pants, scream and cannot be reasoned with. My own children made me run to the likes of Mary Moppets and other daycare facilities of the area on a regular basis. So when I became a grandparent, I hoped that the lack of tolerance I had for the "little ones" would have developed into a mature ability to handle these screams and smells, I was wrong. I could do small doses of my progeny, but not more than a few hours, or an occasional over nighter. Now that they are five and three respectively, I have found my sweet spot. It has taken me this long to enjoy kids, and what a feeling it has become. Can they do no wrong??? Is this a new drug that has clouded my ability to keep money in my pocket, or pass off emotional tantrums as "strong personalities"?
Now I know your thinking, "oh great, another silly grandparent with pictures of the Kids" that no one cares about but them. But my dear reader, you would be wrong. I have truly wonderful and unique babies here. If you could just look through my eyes, you would see I am right. There are no other children like them in this world. They are the future saviors of the planet, the smartest beings to be born, and so beautiful that your eyes weep from their very presence. Oh my God, I hate grandparents that sound like I do now, but I am right, and those others are just partial to their gene pool. I am a rational and educated person, and I would never fall victim to the intoxicating effects of these children if it were not true. Look at my resume, ask my business associates; they can vouch for my logical and trained mind.
