The best " results " for searches are the ones you arrive at without searching. Knowledge is always disseminated by indexed " catch phrases ", by indexed I do not mean ranked for relevance, but alpahbetically. Ranked by relevance is merely a race; if I searched for " hamburger " and needed information on hamburgers why is Neil Hamburger relevant — If he was called Mr. Hamburgers would he not turn up in a search for the plural too —
Popular search engines serve up fast-food results, information that can mislead even the most clued-in.If I went into a library to look for books on hamburgers, I really dont want to know about - http://www.americasfunnyman.com/. And definitely do not want to split hairs over number of said item.
Popular, commercial search engines take the searcher for granted, a very elitist pan-everything attitude that is advertising funded.
Advertising that is far more relevant than the search results that lead you to them.
Ads, Link exchanges offered via content-match out perform direct searches everytime and the reason the engines dont offer drilled down precision searches is soon evident,the internet mall is the reason.Rather than take the content to the user in a succint, precise package they would rather have you wander around and watch paid ads of products you will never use.Viewership is NOT ROI unless you believe ridding another human of some of his time, energy and money is positive ROI.
Loyalty to your service is Good ROI. And loyalty is generated AFTER someone actually tries your service, I advertised on one of the leading SE´s at the highest bid rate for my category for months and in 5 or more months I received 5 inquiries, why? Is software-engineering outsourcing not popular anymore?
Of course it is, but since when did the Internet search / advertising giants offer choice of channels or true ROI —
If you are a niche in a niche in a niche you will succeed with SE´s because you have no competition, if you are one of many you are dead in the water no matter what, not because your service offering is insipid but becuase you do not have the tools to cause branding.
Until the current crop of Internet search / advertising leaders find a definite way to stop wasting my time, I vote for libraries.
