Not all businesses will be successful and many lack the fundamental resources to ensure that they can become sufficiently self-sustaining to allow their owners the type of life style they would like. Typically all of these items will be captured in a business plan, which includes the financial assessment you may need to help with financing. Many people look at a business plan as something they need to get funds from investors, however this could not be further from reality. Yes, your investor, bank or family member may ask for a business plan, however if you plan to start a work at home business, you as the owner / operator should do your home work to make sure that all of your hard work will result in success. No sense in starting something that is doomed from the beginning.
Many people will complete a forecast of the amount of product or services that they will be able to sell, they will develop the cost associated with manufacture / delivery and an estimate of the overhead costs associated with running your business. This often will be assembled into a cash flow statement and an income statement developed over a five-year period. In addition, there will be supporting narrative that will document your vision for your business as well as all of your assumptions. Having a positive cash flow and income statement for your business will go a long way towards helping you secure the resources you need. Most important it will provide you with the confidence to start a work at home business.
Many new entrepreneurs will overlook required licenses that they need and bylaws that may be in place. Even if you have a positive cash flow, it can all come to nothing if you are breaking a bylaw or fail to obtain the appropriate license to support your business.
